Ukraine thwarts Russian drones in overnight assault

By Ezekiel David

Ukraine’s air force reported that it successfully shot down all five drones launched by Russia during an overnight assault.

The attack also involved three Iskander-M ballistic missiles, as reported in a statement shared on the air force’s Telegram channel. Among the drones used in the strike were three Shahed models, while the other two remain unidentified.

Earlier reports from Reuters have highlighted Russia’s increasing use of low-cost drones in its strikes on Ukraine. These drones are often employed to probe air defences or to serve as decoys.

Officials in both the Kyiv and Kirovohrad regions confirmed there were no casualties or damage as a result of the attack. Kyiv’s air defences were active throughout the night, with authorities confirming that the capital was unharmed.

On Thursday, air raid sirens went off four times, warning residents of possible attacks. Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Kyiv has experienced more than 1,200 air alerts, according to local officials.
