UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has refuted claims that universities are admitting more foreign students due to financial pressures.

Speaking to Sky News, she addressed concerns that institutions might be favouring overseas students, whose fees are generally higher than those of UK students, to avoid raising domestic tuition fees.

Phillipson clarified that the presence of international students, who currently comprise about 20% of the student population, does not reduce the availability of places for UK students.

She emphasised that these students contribute to subsidising the education costs for others.

She acknowledged the financial challenges universities face but rejected the idea of increasing tuition fees for domestic students, citing the burden of living costs on young people. Phillipson stated that an increase in such fees is not a viable option.

Despite a noted decline in undergraduate admissions from abroad, Phillipson remained firm that international students play a crucial role in supporting the education system.

She also hinted at potential reforms, promising further announcements on the matter in the future.
