Cites mortuary congestion

The management of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has announced plans to conduct a mass burial of abandoned and unclaimed corpses in its mortuary.
The hospital said the exercise has become necessary due to severe congestion in the mortuary facility.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, management said the affected corpses have exceeded the statutory 90-day period from the date of deposition without being claimed by relatives or depositors.
According to the hospital, the continued retention of the corpses has placed considerable pressure on available mortuary space and facilities, affecting standards of care and service delivery.

Management said while it recognises the sensitivity and emotional nature of the exercise, the evacuation is necessary to ensure proper mortuary management.
It has advised depositors of the affected corpses to come forward to claim and recover them.
The hospital warned that all unclaimed corpses after 21 October 2026 shall be evacuated for mass burial without further notice.
It is unclear how many corpses will be affected by the exercise and efforts to speak with the Chief Medical Director, Professor Ikpeme Asanye, were unsuccessful.
