Bayer 04 Leverkusen were denied victory after Kai Havertz struck a late penalty to earn Arsenal F.C. a 1–1 draw in their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first-leg clash.

The German side had taken the lead just after the break when Robert Andrich headed home a corner delivered by Alex Grimaldo in the 46th minute at the BayArena.

Leverkusen looked set to secure a narrow win before substitute Noni Madueke was brought down in the box late in the game.

Havertz stepped up and converted from the spot in the 89th minute to rescue Arsenal and keep the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg.
