Manchester United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Italian side Como in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, raising fresh questions about their form under manager Michael Carrick.
Como delivered a dominant performance at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, scoring four goals to condemn the English club to one of their most disappointing results of the season.
Nico Paz set the tone just two minutes into the match, curling a superb effort into the net after an assist from Lucas da Cunha to give the hosts an early lead.
Manchester United struggled to respond, and Como maintained their control as the match progressed. Tasos Douvikas doubled the advantage in the 49th minute, finishing after a pass from Paz shortly after the restart.
Paz then struck again in the 57th minute to make it 3-0, leaving United with a mountain to climb. The midfielder’s outstanding display earned him a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the match.
Como were not finished. Centre-back Jacobo Ramón rose highest to head home in the 76th minute, extending the lead to four goals and deepening United’s misery.
Joshua Zirkzee scored a consolation goal for United in stoppage time, controlling the ball before finishing in the 90th minute plus one. The goal did little to soften the impact of a heavy defeat.
The result marked the first time Manchester United had conceded four goals in a Champions League match since their 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in November 1994.
The defeat also intensified questions about Carrick’s future, with frustrated supporters expressing their displeasure as some travelling fans left before the final whistle.
For Como, the victory was a memorable European achievement. For United, it was another damaging setback in a season in which consistency has remained elusive.
