Atletico Madrid brightened their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League quarter finals after overcoming Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 in the round of 16 first leg at Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on Tuesday night.
Marcos Llorente opened the scoring for Atletico in the 6th minute before providing an assist for Antoine Griezmann to double the lead in the 14th minute.
Diego Simeone’s unrelenting side grabbed a third goal a minute later through Julian Alvarez before Robin Le Normand banged home the fourth in the 22nd minute.

It was a night to forget for Tottenham’s 22-year-old goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, who was substituted in the 16th minute after two slips that saw the home side leading 3-0 a quarter of an hour into the encounter.
Minutes later, Pedro Porro scored Spurs’ first of the night after a brilliant partnership with Richarlison.
Already on one goal and one assist, Griezmann provided another effort to assist Alvarez’s second goal of the night.
Dominic Solanke netted the second goal for Spurs, from a Porro assist, in the 76th minute to keep hope alive for Igor Tudor’s side ahead of the return leg in North London on Wednesday, March 18.
