The University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, Owerri will hold its maiden convocation ceremony on Saturday, with 505 pioneer graduates set to receive degrees, including 20 students who finished with First Class honours.
Addressing journalists during a pre-convocation briefing in Owerri, yesterday, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Christopher Eze, said the milestone marks a new chapter for the specialised university.
“UAES is an agriculture and environment anchored university, but our reach is deliberately broader than agriculture and environment alone,” Eze said.
He disclosed that the university, established by law in 2019, admitted its first students in the 2021/2022 academic session. It currently has a student population of 2,355 across five faculties: Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Science and Computing, Engineering, Arts, Management, and Social Sciences, spread across 31 departments.

The VC said Saturday’s ceremony will confer degrees on the institution’s first two graduating sets. For the 2024/2025 session, 115 students from 14 departments will graduate, with six of them earning First Class honours. The 2025/2026 session produced 390 graduates from 24 departments, with 14 of them bagging First Class, a stronger showing at the highest level of academic distinction. In total, 20 First Class graduates will be honoured from the 505 pioneer graduates.
The university also named its overall best graduating students. Miss Alfred Ugochi Juliet of the Department of Business Administration emerged best for 2024/2025 with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.92. Mr. Oji Shedrach Ozeum of the Department of Marketing was named best for 2025/2026 with a CGPA of 4.90.
Speaking on academic standards, Professor Eze urged the public not to doubt the value of a UAES certificate. He said 20 of the school’s programmes currently hold full accreditation, while four others have interim status and are undergoing active improvement.
The maiden convocation is expected to draw dignitaries from within and outside Imo State as the university celebrates its first graduates.
