UAES deploys electronic voting for maiden SUG election

The University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, recently conducted its maiden student union government’s (SUG) election through a secure online voting platform, marking another significant milestone in the University’s history. The exercise recorded the participation of 260 accredited students.

Fourteen candidates contested for various positions. At the end of the exercise, Izuwa Victor, was returned unopposed for the office of SUG president. He was returned with 217 votes out of 236 valid votes cast. Awusaku Chisom also emerged as vice-president, having garnered 197 votes. Also elected were Prosper Chimezirim Onuekwusi as Secretary-General, defeating Dike Bright by 142 votes to 94; Osunwoke Ijeoma Doris as Assistant Secretary-General with 198 votes; Orji Maryann Ozioma as Director of Welfare, polling 151 votes to defeat Wakili Blessing Chizoba, who secured 85 votes; Evoegbu Bright as Director of Finance with 205 votes; Chibuzo Favour as Director of Treasury with 208 votes; Aliukwu Casmir as Director of Sports with 222 votes; Nelson Chinaemerem as Director of Information with 221 votes; Obie Grace Chinemerem as Director of Socials with 223 votes; Ikeanyi Chibuike Godson as Director of Transportation and Jumbo Precious as Director of Academic with 219 votes.

The online election was conducted seamlessly, with accredited students receiving secure voting links while free Wi-Fi was provided throughout the exercise to ensure uninterrupted access to the voting platform.

The exercise was witnessed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christopher C. Eze; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Dr. Obinna Adumanya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Dr. Emmanuel Uzodinma; the acting Registrar, Dr. Olachi Ihejirika; the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ekene Nwabueze; the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Emmanuel Mbanusi; the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Ozoemena Samuel and representatives of the Independent Students Electoral Commission (ISEC).

In separate remarks, the Vice-Chancellor and the NANS JCC chairman congratulated the newly elected executives and commended the orderly conduct of the election. Dr. Uzodinma, whose office supervises the students affairs unit, also urged them to provide inclusive leadership by carrying every student along, regardless of electoral choices and to work closely with the university’s management in advancing peace, unity and development within the university community.

Responding, the SUG president, Victor, expressed appreciation to the management for providing a credible platform for the election and thanked the students for the confidence reposed in the new leadership. He assured the university community that the executive council would pursue an inclusive, growth-oriented administration committed to serving the interests of all students.

The successful conduct of the election reflects UAES’ commitment to transparent governance, innovation and meaningful students’ participation in the affairs of the university, while reinforcing the university’s resolve to build strong democratic institutions within the campus community.
