From Desmond Mgboh, Kano
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres in Kano and Jigawa States have threatened to suspend training activities in their centers if the Federal Government failed to address their concerns over the mode of their payment.
Specifically, the centres rejected a move by the Federal Government to tie their payment to a 65 percent monthly attendance by trainees.
A statement issued in Kano and signed by Ibrahim S. Nuhu and Jabir Wada Isa for the accredited TVET centers in Kano and Jigawa States insisted that the new payment system contravenes the terms of reference in their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government.
They wondered why the centers should be made to bear the financial implications of the absence of the trainees when the recruitment, selection and deployment of the same trainees were conducted through institutions and processes that were clearly outside their control.
The centers warned that failure to resolve their demand could lead the suspension of training activities on the 4th October, while insisting that the disruption will affect a good number of young Nigerians currently enrolled in the skills acquisition programme.
They also feared that the suspension of the program would clearly undermine the administration’s commitment to youth skills programmes and development.
They appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunde Alausa, to urgently intervene and direct the payment of the outstanding liabilities in line with the provisions of the MOU signed with theGovernment.
