An accomplished Nigerian medical doctor, nephrologist, and public administrator, Dr Tunji Alausa has, through public service, shown commitment to intellectual development, exceptional leadership, and a visionary approach to transforming national institutions.
His journey to becoming a major driver of national policy began with an outstanding educational background. He pursued his passion for Medicine at the University of Lagos, where he completed a rigorous medical training and graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1993.
Determined to further enrich his skills, he relocated to the United Kingdom where he completed an internal medicine residency at the Royal Bolton Hospital and the University of Newcastle between 1995 and 1997. Driven by a desire for further specialisation, he moved to the United States, where he undertook another internal medicine residency at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.
His outstanding clinical skills and leadership qualities led to his appointment as Chief Medical Resident at the institution. Following this achievement, he served as an assistant professor at Rush University Medical School before finalising a specialised fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Upon completing his world class training, Alausa transitioned into the private sector, establishing a massive footprint as a healthcare entrepreneur. He founded the Kidney Care Centre, a premier nephrology outfit in the United States that delivered vital care to patients facing complex renal conditions.

He expanded his entrepreneurial reach by establishing the Dialysis Care Centre, an innovative organisation dedicated to making dialysis services accessible and affordable. Through these ventures, he led diverse teams of medical professionals. His dedication earned him widespread recognition, culminating in his selection as one of America’s top physicians.
Alausa’s extensive period in the private sector refined his managerial skills and earned him a reputation as an efficiency-driven leader capable of building impactful institutions from the ground.
In August 2023, when he was initially appointed as the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, it was in recognition of his immense value in medical practice and public administration. He brought critical insights to bear on national health challenges before being redeployed as the substantive Minister of Education in October 2024.
As Minister of Education, he has pioneered the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, a data driven framework designed to revolutionise learning. One of his landmark achievements is the rollout of a comprehensive educational census that assigns a unique Learner Identification Number to every student, ensuring precise tracking and evidence based planning.
Dr. Alausa has fiercely championed technical and vocational education and training, creating a curriculum that equips youths with practical skills in areas like tech, agriculture, and manufacturing.
To pull out-of-school children back into the classroom, he introduced an innovative voucher-based partnership with private schools. Furthermore, he has driven the reintroduction of History into schools, launched technology-based school safety systems, and successfully stabilised industrial relations in tertiary institutions.
For his brilliant policy execution, administrative competence that have brought remarkable changes in the education sector, Dr. Tunji Alausa is winner of the Minister of the Year Award 2026.
