The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has warned that the recent increase in petrol prices could lead to social unrest.

TUC President Festus Osifo, in a statement released on Wednesday, condemned the price hike, which saw petrol jump to N897 and N855 per litre from N617.

The TUC said that the increase, implemented without consulting stakeholders, disregards the welfare of Nigerians, especially workers. “The sudden hike in fuel and electricity costs will only exacerbate these challenges, leading to further hardship and potential social unrest,” the statement read.

The TUC urged the government to reverse the decision, strengthen the naira, and alleviate the suffering of citizens. The Nigeria Labour Congress has also called for the immediate reversal of the price increase.
