President Donald Trump has dismissed the idea of deploying United States ground troops to Iran, describing such a move as a “waste of time” amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking in a telephone interview with NBC News on Thursday, Trump said Iran had already suffered major military setbacks and that sending American troops on the ground was unnecessary at this stage of the war.

“It’s a waste of time. They’ve lost everything. They’ve lost their navy. They’ve lost everything they can lose,” Trump said, brushing aside earlier warnings from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi that any ground invasion by the US or Israel would prove disastrous for invading forces.

Trump also indicated that Washington is keen on seeing a complete change in Iran’s leadership, suggesting the United States would prefer a swift restructuring rather than a prolonged political transition.

According to him, the goal would be to “clean out everything” quickly, adding that he already had ideas about who could lead Iran next but declined to reveal any names.

Earlier, Trump had suggested the United States would likely play a role in determining Iran’s future leadership after joint strikes by the US and Israel reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, at the start of the conflict.

Meanwhile, reports from Tehran indicated heavy bombardments on Friday as Israeli forces said they were targeting what they described as “regime infrastructure” in what officials called a new phase of the ongoing war.
