US President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of placing the strategic Strait of Hormuz under joint control with Iran, while signalling a potential regime change in Tehran.

Speaking to reporters, as seen in a video posted online, Trump said, “It would be jointly controlled.” When asked who would share the control, he clarified, “Maybe me. Me and the Ayatollah, whoever the Ayatollah is! There’ll also be a very serious form of a regime change!”

He further described the current Iranian leadership, saying, “Now in all fairness, everybody’s been killed from the regime. They’re really starting off. There’s automatically a regime change. But we’re dealing with some people that I find to be very reasonable, very solid.”

On potential successors within Iran, Trump added, “The people within know who they are. They’re very respected. And maybe one of them will be exactly what we’re looking for.”

He also drew a regional comparison, remarking, “Look at Venezuela, how well that’s working out.”
