Trump hints at US talks with Iran

As the war continues into its third week, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that the United States is in talks with Iran, but he also noted that Tehran is not yet prepared to accept an agreement to cease the war.

“Yes, we’re talking to them,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, without providing details on the nature of the talks.

“But I don’t think they’re ready. But they are getting pretty close.”

Trump also expressed uncertainty over whether he even wants a deal, citing the chaotic state of Iran’s leadership after the deaths of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of other officials during the initial U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28.

“First of all, nobody even knows who you’re dealing with… they want to make a deal badly,” he added.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the suggestion of talks, telling CBS’s Face The Nation that Iran is not interested in negotiating with the United States.

“We are stable and strong enough. We are only defending our people,” he said.

“We don’t see any reason why we should talk with Americans, because we were talking with them when they decided to attack us. There is no good experience talking with Americans.”
