The administration of United States President Donald Trump is considering the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe as a possible economic incentive in negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
The proposal, which has faced opposition from European officials, could involve restoring the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, with part of the revenue generated potentially allocated to Kyiv.
Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, raised the idea during discussions with Ukrainian and European representatives. The proposal was also reportedly discussed following their first visit to Kyiv in September.
Under the plan being considered by US negotiators, renewed Russian gas deliveries to European markets could form part of a broader agreement to end the conflict.
However, European officials have rejected the proposal, while American representatives continue to explore the possibility as part of the ongoing peace discussions.
The Trump administration is also examining the possibility of restarting the Nord Stream pipeline, which previously transported Russian natural gas directly to Germany.
The pipeline’s potential revival would represent another route for restoring Russian gas supplies to Europe, although US representatives have reportedly distanced themselves from the idea of reopening it.
