An articulated vehicle was on Tuesday reported to have killed a graduate of the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, who was awaiting mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), programme.
Report had it that the graduate, identified as Ogechi Mary Ezekiel, was crossing the Aba – Owerri road at the gate of the polytechnic when she was hit by a speeding tricycle which threw her on the lane of the truck which crushed her.
The truck with number plate; XA 60 YEN, was said to be heading towards the Bata Bus stop/Ikot Ekpene road when the incident occurred.
The driver of the truck was arrested by the police while the tricycle rider was said to have fled the scene as soon as he hit the victim.
The situation caused heavy traffic in the area as students of the polytechnic took to the road to protest the death of their colleague.
The students also made several attempts to destroy the truck but were reportedly stopped by policemen. However, they succeeded in deflating the tyres of the truck.
According to a source, “The girl came out from the polytechnic and was crossing over to the other lane of the road when the tricycle knocked her into the path of the moving truck.
“She didn’t see the tricycle because it overtook the truck from the wrong side. I heard the girl had graduated but awaiting mobilization for NYSC.”
Policemen and men of the FRSC were reported to have been deployed to the area as students continue to protest.
