Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade operating under Operation UDO KA and through Operation EASTERN SANITY II, have uncovered a shallow grave and exhumed the remains of the late Chief Ibe Anyadu of Aggah Community in Imo State.
The Army said the recovery was made on Sunday, August 2, following the arrest of suspects linked to violent crimes in the area.
In a Monday statement signed by Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, the Army said one of the suspects arrested in recent intelligence-driven operations confessed to involvement in Anyadu’s killing and volunteered to lead troops to the burial site.
The military spokesman said the suspects guided troops to Umudike Forest, identified as one of the criminals’ known camps, where the remains were exhumed.
Anyadu was allegedly murdered by members of a criminal gang recently apprehended in connection with the killing of a Nigerian Army soldier and the recovery of stolen service weapons, according to the statement.
The exhumation was conducted in the presence of the deceased’s family members, vigilante personnel from Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, and representatives of Aggah and Umudike communities.
“The family provided a coffin and ambulance to ensure a dignified burial in accordance with their customs and traditions,” the statement reads in part.
Commander, Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Fadairo, extended condolences to the family and prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the late chief.
He assured the family and Aggah community that “justice will be served, as the suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The statement added that Headquarters Operation UDO KA remains committed to dismantling criminal networks in the South-East and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
