Troops in the counter-insurgency operation in the Northeast have foiled two attacks by terrorists on border towns in Borno State.
The attack on New Marte, a town along Chad Republic early Tuesday, was the second in two weeks. The terrorists also attacked Kumshe in Bama Local Government, a town that has suffered attacks by Boko Haram in the past.
Terrorists believed to be members of Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) swooped on New Marte early Tuesday, leading to a fierce battle with the military.
Spokesman of the Joint Task Force Northeast Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Reuben Kovangiya in a statement, said the terrorists targetted the Army location in the town, an affront which triggered serious battle with troops.
He said the attack was,however,repelled through combined efforts of the ground forces and the air component of the counter-terrorism joint task force.
“In the early hours of May 27, 2025, troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) foiled an attack by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on their location in New Marte, Borno state,” he announced.
He disclosed that the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the troops’ location, but were confronted with heavy gunfire.
“The Air Component provided immediate Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and offensive fire support, leading to the decimation of several fleeing terrorists,” he explained.
According to the the Army, two soldiers died in the attack with several terrorists killed.
The troops also recovered a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) an SUV,and many motorcycles abandoned by the terrorists.
“During exploitation of the area, troops discovered lifeless bodies of the terrorists, with traces of blood on their withdrawal routes, indicating additional casualties inflicted on the terrorists,” the army disclosed.
