The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, has advised citizens to be mindful of their actions, warning that the decisions and choices made today could have consequences in the future.

Ojajuni gave the advice at the 66th Independence Anniversary programme held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where he identified integrity, discipline, knowledge, service and respect for shared values as essential ingredients for national development.

The police commissioner stressed that meaningful transformation must begin with individuals and subsequently reflect in leadership, institutions and the wider society.

The programme, organised by the International Friendship League (IFL), was themed, “Nigeria at 66: A Call to Citizenship Transformation.”

Ojajuni described the gathering as more than an Independence Day celebration, saying it provided an opportunity for reflection and meaningful dialogue on leadership, national values and the future of Nigeria. Drawing from his experience in policing and leadership, he emphasised the need for Nigerians to always consider the future in their actions and decisions.

According to him, “the future should always be taken into cognisance,” urging Nigerians to understand that their conduct, decisions and values today would have consequences for generations yet unborn.

Reflecting on the importance of preserving knowledge and national values, Ojajuni recalled that when some professors asked why he wanted to pursue a PhD, he told them that his motivation was “to give future generations the knowledge of the past, so that our values and lessons would not die with us.”

He commended the International Friendship League for providing a platform for meaningful dialogue on citizenship, leadership and national development.

Ojajuni urged Nigerians to use the Independence anniversary to renew their commitment to the Nigeria project, stressing that the kind of nation inherited by future generations would ultimately be determined by the choices and actions of citizens today.
