Tinubu to AbdulRazaq: Sardauna title is call to greater service

President Bola Tinubu has charged Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to regard his conferment as the Sardauna of Ilorin not merely as an honour, but as a call to greater service and responsibility.

The President gave the charge in a congratulatory message to AbdulRazaq ahead of his turbaning as the Sardauna of Ilorin by the Emir of Ilorin, His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Kolapo Sulu-Gambari, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Tinubu said the prestigious traditional title was a fitting recognition of the governor’s leadership, public service and contributions to the development of Kwara State.

In a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President particularly cited AbdulRazaq’s efforts to promote inclusive growth, social cohesion and the well-being of the people of the state.

He urged the governor to bring his experience, leadership, statesmanship, and goodwill to bear on the new responsibility while advancing the interests of the people of Kwara State and contributing to Nigeria’s progress and unity.

“Governor AbdulRazaq, I urge you to embrace the culturally significant and historic title not only as a mark of honour, but also as a call to greater service and responsibility,” Tinubu said.

The president expressed confidence that the governor would use the platform and goodwill associated with the title to further serve the people and nation.

“I am confident that you will bring your experience, leadership, statesmanship and goodwill to bear in advancing the interests of the people of Kwara State and contributing to the progress and unity of Nigeria,” he added.

The turbaning is to be performed by the 11th Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Sulu-Gambari, in Ilorin.

Tinubu also commended the Emir for bestowing the prestigious title on AbdulRazaq, who is also President of the Forum of Regions of Africa.

He praised the traditional ruler for preserving the important role of traditional institutions in fostering harmony and supporting democratic governance and sustainable development.

The president wished AbdulRazaq continued success, wisdom, strength, and good health as he assumes the responsibilities associated with the title.

“May this honour further inspire you to serve your people and our nation,” Tinubu said.
