President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday, reaffirmed Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to the One China policy.
Tinubu made the reaffirmation during the celebration of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in Abuja.
Speaking during the ceremony, Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Power and Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, Joseph Tegbe, said Nigeria’s friendship with China rests upon mutual respect and sovereign equality.
Tegbe said: “Let me reaffirm on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to the One China principle.”
He also said the Nigerian Government recognised the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the whole of China.
Tegbe, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the people of Nigeria, congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese nation on the milestone.
He wished that the years ahead bring China continued peace, progress and well-being.
The minister also wished that the friendship between Nigeria and China grows stronger with each succeeding generation.

Earlier, Tegbe conveyed President Tinubu’s warm congratulations together with the compliments and sincere goodwill of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to President Xi Jinping and the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China on the 77th anniversary.
He said Nigeria commended China’s successful leadership for their sustained commitment to national development and saluted the generations of Chinese citizens whose enterprise and perseverance have advanced the country.
Tegbe added that China’s advancement and achievements in manufacturing, science, high-speed rail, and clean energy command significant respect.
He recalled the World Bank’s records that almost 800 million people have been lifted out of extreme poverty since the reforms that began in 1978 in China.
The minister further said behind the figures were families with greater security and children with wider possibilities.
“This anniversary, ladies and gentlemen, also invites us to look back with affection on our shared journey between Nigeria and China.
“When Nigeria and China established diplomatic relations on 10th February, 1971, the foundations were being laid for a friendship whose reach neither country could then fully anticipate.
“We remember with gratitude the diplomats, traders and students who crossed unfamiliar distances and helped our people understand one another. Their early encounters prepared the ground for the good cooperation that we enjoy today,” he stated.
