Tinubu renames federal university after late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi

From Paul Orude, Bauchi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, after the late renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

The announcement was made during the president’s visit to Bauchi State on Saturday to console the government and people following the cleric’s death.

President Tinubu was received by Governor Bala Mohammed after the Air Force plane carrying him landed at Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport at 4:16 pm.

He proceeded directly to Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi Mosque, where he was welcomed by the son of the late cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalifa, and members of the bereaved family.

The president was accompanied by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, as well as the governors of Yobe and Plateau States, Mai Mala Buni and Caleb Mutfwang.

Key members of his cabinet, including Professor Ali Pate (Health and Social Welfare), Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, and other appointees from the state, were also in attendance.

Speaking about the late cleric, President Tinubu said the late Sheikh brought impactful knowledge to the people.

“He was a great scholar, a Nigerian conscience who worked tirelessly in the path of Almighty Allah, preaching sermons, spreading knowledge, and upholding honesty and great character,” President Tinubu states.

“He was kind to all and loved his country.

We come from Almighty Allah and shall return to Him.

The best tribute we can offer is to continue to pray for peace, stability, economic prosperity, and development, and to live by the values he left behind.

“May Almighty Allah grant him Aljanah Firdaus and continue to keep all of you safe, keep our country united, and grant us peace, prosperity, and good development.”

In a special announcement, President Tinubu said, “From today onward, to immortalise him, the Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, will henceforth be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University.”

Responding on behalf of the family, Sheikh Ibrahim Dahiru Usman Bauchi, the eldest son of the late cleric, expressed gratitude to the president for the visit and prayers.

He also thanked Governor Bala Mohammed for his continued support to the family.

Governor Bala Mohammed, in turn, thanked President Tinubu for honouring the family and the state.

Earlier, Dr. Bashir Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, expressed profound gratitude to the president for sending a high-profile delegation to attend the funeral and personally visiting Bauchi to console the family.

Members of the presidential delegation included the governors of Yobe and Plateau States, as well as representatives of the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
