Tinubu pays Super Falcons ₦140m each, keeps $100,000 WAFCON promise

Super Falcons

The wait is over for Nigeria’s Super Falcons as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made good his $100,000 pledge to the Senior Female National Team, months after their historic triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Nigeria claimed a record-extending 10th continental title.

According to a release from the office of the Director General, National Sports Commission, the players have started receiving payments of about ₦140 million, the naira equivalent of the $100,000 reward the President promised after the team fought back to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final in July 2025.

Trailing 2-0, the Super Falcons produced a spirited second-half performance to stun the Moroccans and reclaim the African crown, further cementing their status as the continent’s most successful women’s national team.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked President Tinubu for keeping his word, describing the gesture as a welcome recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.

The payment is another demonstration of the President’s commitment to rewarding sporting excellence and motivating Nigerian athletes to achieve greater success on the international stage.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has been a breath of fresh air for Nigerian sports, with his support extending beyond the Super Falcons to other national teams. He had similarly promised and delivered $100,000 rewards to members of D’Tigress following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, where Nigeria secured a fifth consecutive continental title.

Technocrats Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, who lead the National Sports Commission, have continued to drive a renewed approach to sports administration, with emphasis on athlete welfare, international exposure and the delivery of major sporting events.

The two have also overseen Nigeria’s hosting, through the National Sports Commission, of about 30 international sporting competitions, reinforcing the country’s growing profile as a destination for major sports events.

The Commission commends President Tinubu for his consistent support for Nigerian athletes and for demonstrating that sporting excellence deserves tangible recognition.

The President’s commitment, it added, has strengthened confidence among athletes and sports administrators while encouraging a culture of reward, accountability and national pride.
