President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their posts on or before March 31, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), the directive is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the polls.
The circular, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, specifies that the order applies to all categories of presidential political appointees.
Those affected include Ministers, Ministers of State, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, Personal Assistants to the President, as well as Directors-General, Chief Executive Officers of Federal Government Parastatals, Agencies, Commissions, and Government-owned Companies, among others.

The statement added that all affected officials are expected to submit their letters of resignation through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on or before the March 31 deadline.
President Tinubu reiterated that the directive was intended to ensure compliance with electoral laws, uphold transparency, and create a level playing field for all aspirants in the forthcoming elections.
He further emphasised his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
