President Bola Tinubu has directed that a nationwide programme to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians begin within 30 days.
In a post on his verified X handle, @officialABAT, he said the scheme, branded, The Power Force and driven by the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and other stakeholders, is part of his Renewed Hope Agenda to create jobs, close the nation’s metering gap and strengthen the electricity market.
Tinubu said the programme will give young people hands-on technical skills and link them to employment in the power sector. He said it is structured to create jobs, equip participants with employable skills and “restore dignity through productive work.”
He explained the opportunity will be open to eligible Nigerians who have completed secondary school, with a quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

President Tinubu reiterated that the PMI was established to eliminate Nigeria’s metering deficit, end estimated billing, protect electricity consumers and promote transparency in the power sector. He said wider metering will ensure households and businesses “pay only for the electricity they consume” while boosting revenue collection for distribution companies.
He added that clearer revenue flows will help distribution companies reduce losses, maintain infrastructure, expand connections and invest in service improvements. He said the broader reforms are intended to create a power sector that is fairer to consumers, more attractive to investors and better able to provide reliable electricity.
“I have directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to work with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, NAPTIN and all relevant stakeholders to commence this programme within the next 30 days,” Tinubu said.
He urged qualified young Nigerians to apply once the portal opens, saying: “Join The Power Force. Learn a skill. Earn with dignity. Help us end estimated billing and be part of the work to light up Nigeria.”
Applications open July 4, 2026, via the Presidential Metering Initiative portal at pmi.naptin.gov.ng.
