President Bola Tinubu has described the late Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni (retd) as a man who demonstrated courage and dedication throughout his military career and inspired many young officers to prioritise national interests above personal gain. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president expressed profound sorrow over the death of Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who passed away on January 23, 2025, at the age of 81.
He described General Useni, who hailed from Plateau State, as a notable figure in both military and political spheres.
President Tinubu prayed that God Almighty grants Lieutenant-General Useni’s soul eternal rest and provides solace to his grieving family during this difficult time.
Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo also mourned the demise of Useni, a former military Administrator of the defunct Bendel State, describing his demise as a big loss to the people and Government of Edo State.

Governor Okpebholo, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, said General Useni was a true statesman who championed education reforms, oversaw the development of crucial infrastructure, and was a tireless advocate for justice. “He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to public service, his kind spirit, optimism, and his dedication to the people of Bendel State (now Edo and Delta States),” the statement said. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, described Useni’s death as the “fall of one of the biggest trees in the forest of Nigeria” saying that, all will miss the retired Army General.
In a statement by his spokesman, Lere Olayinka, Wike said the late General was a leader Nigerians will never forget for helping to develop the FCT when he served as the minister between 1993 and 1998.
Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, also condoled with the friends, families and associates of a Useni.
Former Senate President, David Mark, in a statement, said “General Useni was a gallant soldier and a pragmatic politician who served the nation with honour and dignity. His selfless services, bravery, and leadership will forever be remembered and honoured.”
