President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Chief Ralph Obioha, former lawmaker and prominent pro-democracy activist, saying his sacrifices during one of Nigeria’s most difficult political periods must not be forgotten.
Tinubu, in a condolence message issued on Wednesday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Obioha as a statesman whose commitment to democratic governance came at considerable personal cost during the struggle to restore democracy following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The President particularly recalled Obioha’s role as a founding member and prominent leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), saying he stood firmly for democratic governance despite the pressures and challenges of the period.
According to Tinubu, Obioha belonged to a generation of Nigerians who “answered the call of duty” at critical moments in the country’s history.
The President said the late NADECO chieftain remained steadfast in his belief that Nigeria’s future was tied to democracy, justice, constitutionalism and the right of citizens to choose their leaders.
“While the passage of time may dim memories, the contributions of patriots who stood firm during difficult chapters of our national history must never be forgotten,” Tinubu said.
He added: “Chief Ralph Obioha was a courageous Nigerian who made sacrifices for democracy and remained committed to the ideals of a better Nigeria.”
Tinubu said Obioha’s generation faced extraordinary challenges and that the deceased “played his part in defending the principles he believed would strengthen our democracy and our nation.”
The President also mourned the loss of Obioha to his family, community and the nation, promising that his courage, convictions, service and belief in Nigeria would be remembered.
“His passing is a loss to his family, his community and the nation. We shall remember him for his courage, his convictions, his service and his belief in Nigeria,” he said.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Obioha’s family and loved ones, as well as the people of Imo State, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, members of NADECO and other Nigerians mourning the former lawmaker.
He prayed that God would comfort the bereaved and grant eternal rest to the deceased.
“May the memory of Chief Ralph Obioha endure as a reminder that the building of a nation requires courage, sacrifice, conviction and faith,” the President added.
