Tinubu mourns Imam Gbajabiamila, describes him as beacon of guidance for Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, paid tribute to the late Imam Tijani Olubodun Shehu Gbajabiamila, describing the veteran Islamic scholar as a unifying force, whose spiritual leadership and community service left an enduring mark on Lagos State and the nation.

In a statement, the President recalled a long personal and public association with the late cleric, saying he benefited from Imam Gbajabiamila’s counsel both during his time as Governor of Lagos State and earlier in life. “As I reflect on the life of Sheikh Imam Tijani Olubodun Shehu Gbajabiamila, who passed on recently, I have fond memories of his remarkable contributions as a well-respected community leader and religious leader,” he said.

The President praised the Imam’s scholarship and pastoral care, noting his ability to apply Quranic teaching to everyday life. “His knowledge of the Quran and Islamic teachings was unparalleled and he was revered for his ability to interpret and apply Islamic principles to everyday life,” the statement read.

Tinubu added that Imam Gbajabiamila was a strong advocate for education, who encouraged young Muslims to pursue knowledge and personal development.

Beyond the pulpit, the late Imam played multiple roles in Lagos’ civic and religious institutions. Tinubu listed several positions held by Gbajabiamila, including Director of Islamic Affairs for the Zumuratul Islamiyyah Youth Association, Vice Chairman of the Council of Chief Imams and Alfas (Lagos Division), trustee of Zumratul Islamiyyah Society Nigeria and adviser to numerous Islamic organisations. “His service to the community was multifaceted,” the President said, adding that the Imam provided fatherly care, counselling and guidance and served as a mediator in local disputes.

Tinubu also highlighted the cleric’s work in promoting interfaith harmony, saying, “He worked tirelessly to build bridges between different religious communities, promoting mutual respect and understanding.”

The President expressed sympathy to the Imam’s family and followers, saying the nation had lost a leader whose “legacy will continue to guide and inspire us.” He extended heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, the people and Government of Lagos State and his teeming students and admirers from around the world.

Reaction from Lagos religious and community leaders was immediate. A prominent Lagos chief imam, speaking on condition of anonymity, described Gbajabiamila as “a teacher who rooted his counsel in compassion and calm,” while a youth leader from Zumuratul Islamiyyah called him “a mentor whose insistence on education changed many lives.”

The statement did not specify funeral arrangements or the cause of death. Officials in Lagos and religious organisations are expected to announce details of memorial services and final rites in the coming days.
