President Bola Tinubu and former Senate President, David Mark, have celebrated the Publisher of Vanguard newspaper, Sam Amuka-Pemu, fondly known as ‘Uncle Sam’ on his 90th birthday.

They described him as an eminent statesman, a towering icon and doyen of Nigerian journalism as well as a pillar of the nation’s socio-political evolution.

Uncle Sam, according to Tinubu, is a beacon of dedication and integrity, whose leadership from the ‘altar of journalism’ has profoundly shaped Nigeria’s media landscape.

“Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience and integrity within the media industry,” he said.

Tinubu recalled how Amuka-Pemu began his journalism career at the Daily Times before co-founding The Punch newspaper alongside the late Chief Olu Aboderin.

He later established the Vanguard newspaper in 1984, which under his stewardship has grown into one of Nigeria’s most influential news outlets.

On the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day, Tinubu conferred on Amuka-Pemu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in recognition of his outstanding service to the country and exemplary leadership in journalism. He urged the younger journalists to emulate the highly respected publisher and leader. He also wished Uncle Sam continued blessings and longevity.

“Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy,” Tinubu stated.

In the same vein, David Mark, in a goodwill message issued by his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, extolled Amuka’s monumental contributions to the growth of the journalism profession and Nigeria’s democratic development. He noted that both the media and the country owe him a debt of gratitude for his unwavering commitment over several decades.

“Sam Amuka’s life and career have been defined by passion, courage, and an unshakable belief in the power of the press to inform, educate, and build the nation. May God’s grace continue to abound in your life. I wish you peace, strength and good health as you celebrate this remarkable milestone,” Mark said.
