President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former Kaduna State Governor and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Makarfi, describing his seven decades of life as a testament to integrity, principled leadership and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s democratic development.

In a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, to mark Makarfi’s 70th birthday on Saturday, the President said the elder statesman’s contributions to public service have earned him admiration across political divides, underscoring the enduring value of integrity and civility in governance.

Tinubu noted that throughout his career as Kaduna State Commissioner for Finance, Governor, Senator and later National Chairman of the PDP, Makarfi consistently demonstrated prudent management of public resources and a commitment to policies that improved the lives of Nigerians.

He described the former governor as “a quintessential public servant” and “a perfect gentleman,” whose exemplary leadership has continued to inspire confidence beyond partisan politics.

According to the President, Makarfi’s calm disposition, respect for dialogue and dedication to national cohesion distinguish him as one of Nigeria’s leading statesmen.

He said those qualities remain enduring virtues that younger generations of political leaders should emulate.

“As you mark this significant milestone, I join your well-wishers in thanking Almighty Allah for your life of service and accomplishment. Your contributions to Kaduna State and our nation remain an enduring testament to purposeful leadership,” Tinubu said.

The President also prayed for Allah to grant the former Kaduna governor many more years in good health, strength, wisdom and peace, expressing hope that he would continue to deploy his vast experience in the service of Nigeria and humanity.

Makarfi served as Governor of Kaduna State from 1999 to 2007 after previously serving as the state’s Commissioner for Finance. He later represented Kaduna North Senatorial District in the Senate before emerging as National Chairman of the PDP, earning a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected advocates of democratic governance and consensus-building.
