President Bola Tinubu is ready and determined to change the game in the power sector through his commitment to comprehensive approach, targeting all aspects of the sector, for Nigerians to enjoy adequate, stable, functional, and reliable power supply.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, in a chat with newsmen during the end of a strategic stakeholders’ meeting at the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at the weekend.
He said the experience that Nigerians have been having about power supply in recent time could be likened to the time of breaking the eggs to make an omelette, assuring them that the time to savour the long-awaited positive results is fast approaching.
According to him, part of the revolutionary steps is the formation of Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) that would harmonise all mass metering initiatives, as well as the purchase and installation of two million metres within the next five years towards bridging the close to eight million metre gap currently in the country. He was optimistic that the metering deficit would have become a thing of the past by the time the present administration would round off.
Reassuring the nation, Adelabu said: “I want to use this opportunity to reassure Nigerians that the government of President Tinubu is ready and determined to change the game in the power sector, which is why we are addressing the root cause of the power sector problems.”
He further explained that every aspect of the power sector value chain, from gas supply to generation, transmission, distribution, and even customer experience, is being addressed to ensure significant improvements in the near future.
While acknowledging the pockets of improvement already witnessed, Adelabu clarified that the goals set by President Tinubu extend far beyond what has been accomplished thus far.
He added that the ultimate objective is to achieve a state of Eldorado, where every Nigerian can enjoy regular and stable power supply.
Drawing a parallel to the repairs and reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Adelabu said progress often comes with temporary inconveniences. He urged the public to endure the short-term hardships, assuring them the final outcome would be well worth it.
“There are a lot of things that we are doing that Nigerians will start seeing. Fine, there have been pockets of improvement here and there. But that is not where we are going. We are still going to Eldorado, whereby every Nigerian will be able to enjoy adequate, stable, functional, and reliable power supply.
“But let me tell you that it is a journey. It is not a destination. We will start to see this improvement. When you are repairing, you will still suffer some damages or experience pains. When the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was being reconstructed, for 10 years, people were still being held up in traffic until they finished.
“So, when we are repairing, people must help us bear the little pains that will come with it. But at the end of the day, we shall all enjoy it. For you to make an omelette, you must break the eggs. This is the period of breaking the eggs; very soon, we will start eating our omelette.”
“I am determined to solve the problems in the power sector, and Nigerians will start to sing our hosanna.”
