The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has dismissed the significance of campaign rallies and youth mobilisation in determining the outcome of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that President Bola Tinubu must ultimately secure votes to win.
Baba-Ahmed expressed confidence in his party’s chances in the forthcoming election while arguing that large political gatherings and public displays of support do not necessarily translate into electoral victory.
He spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The PRP chairman was responding to questions about the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), its campaign activities and the perceived strength of Tinubu’s re-election bid.
He questioned the use of rallies and the mobilisation of young people as evidence that the president was well positioned to win another term.
“If the election is the process which tells you who wins and who loses,” Baba-Ahmed said, dismissing the significance of town hall meetings and large gatherings as indicators of electoral success.
He also argued that financial resources could be used to mobilise large crowds without necessarily demonstrating genuine electoral support.
“If you have billions of Naira, you can mobilize 20 million Nigerians all over this country,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed was particularly dismissive of claims that Tinubu had a strong chance of winning the election based on the activities of his supporters across several states.
When asked whether the president stood a chance of winning in 2027, the PRP chairman responded: “Tinobu doesn’t stand a chance.”
He maintained that the election outcome would depend on the votes cast rather than the size of political gatherings or the number of people participating in campaign activities.
Baba-Ahmed also criticised Tinubu’s administration over insecurity, economic hardship and what he described as its failure to fulfil promises made to Nigerians.
He argued that the country’s worsening security challenges and the difficulties faced by citizens would remain significant issues ahead of the election.
The PRP chairman, however, expressed confidence in his party’s ability to compete, saying it was prepared to address Nigeria’s challenges if elected.
“The PRP administration will take on the problems of this country headlong,” he said.
The interview comes amid preparations by political parties for the 2027 general elections and growing competition among parties seeking to challenge the ruling APC.
