President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of local government chairmen and councillors as monitoring and evaluation officers for economic development projects in their respective councils and wards.
Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, disclosed this yesterday at the General Assembly of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Abuja.
He said appointment letters would be communicated through the ALGON national president, adding that the initiative would strengthen grassroots participation in project monitoring and accountability in public service delivery.
Speaking on “Grassroots Governance in a New Era: Driving Socio-Economic Growth, Security and Community Resilience,” Uzodimma urged council officials to take ownership of the Federal Government’s development agenda and explain its policies and achievements to their constituents.
He called on them to use persuasion and credible evidence to secure public support, while mobilising for Tinubu’s re-election and other All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the 2027 general elections.
Uzodimma said local governments remained central to national development because of their direct connection with communities, stressing that government policies would be judged by their impact on people’s lives.
Functional healthcare facilities, accessible roads, improved markets, agricultural development and responsive administration, he said, would strengthen public confidence.
He urged closer cooperation between governors and council chairmen, who should also work with councillors to advance community development.
The governor cautioned against abandoning inherited projects for political reasons, saying public resources already committed to them must be protected.
He also urged councils to prioritise financial accountability, flood preparedness, sanitation, security, youth empowerment and the inclusion of women and persons with disabilities.
With the elections approaching, Uzodimma called on APC members to resolve internal disputes and focus on earning public trust through performance and effective communication.
Earlier, ALGON National President, Bello Lawal, reaffirmed the association’s support for Tinubu and state governors.
He said effective local administration was essential to translating government policies into tangible benefits, adding that the assembly offered council leaders an opportunity to exchange ideas, address common challenges and strengthen service delivery.
Lawal pledged ALGON’s continued cooperation with the Federal Government and governors, saying stronger local institutions would support development, community security and democratic stability.
