Correspondent of the Sun Newspapers, Aloysius Attah, was yesterday in Awka named the Star Prize Winner of the Correspondents Chapel Media Merit Award organized by the Correspondents Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council as part of activities to mark their End of year Event.
Attah’s winning entry, “Inside Southeast’s Leprosy Settlements”, published in Saturday Sun, September 29, 2024, a report where he visited the leprosy settlements in Okija, Anambra State, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Uzuakoli, Abia State and Oji River, Enugu state and documented firsthand the plight of the inmates abandoned in those settlements, clinched the first prize among the first Top Five stories.
The same report had last Saturday in Lagos, fetched Attah the Rukyatu Danjuma Prize for Public Health Reporter of the Year by the Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA).
Announcing the winning entry, the Panel Chairman, Prof Nwamuo disclosed that the Social Responsibility Theory of the Media guided the panel in their assessment while the scores were allotted on the basis of Headline/ Lead 10 points, Credibility Factor/ Use of Photographs, 20 points, Exclusiveness/ Depth of Coverage: 20 points and Conclusion/ Recommendations, 10 points.

She said Attah’s winning report scored 79 points to beat Emma Elekwa of The Nation who scored 54 points with his own entry titled “Erratic Power Supply Cripples Poultry Businesses in Anambra State” while Emmanuel Uzor, also of The Sun came 3rd with 45 points in his report titled: Disaster Waiting to Happen: Otuocha, Anambra Community risks epidemic following poor hygiene”
Attah had also won the Star Prize of the Prof. Stella Okunna Prize for Ethical Journalism in August this year. The awardees received cash prizes, high end laptop, a plaque and certificate of merit.
Chairman of the Occasion, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Ernest Ezeajughi represented by the Commissioner for Information, Chief Law Mefor described the Correspondents’ Chapel as a key partner in the state government’s solution agenda.
The Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Christian Aburime, assured that the state government would continue to strengthen its relationship with the Correspondents’ Chapel.
