Terrorists broke into Maiduguri early on Monday, detonating explosives in specific locations and firing several gunshots to scare residents away.
At around 1 a.m. on Monday, Maiduguri’s quiet night was interrupted by loud explosions near Ajilari Cross, a city suburb.
“We heard explosions at about 12:45 am. We were observing our night prayers in the mosque in my area. We stopped the prayers later because we were hearing gunshots continuously,” Malam Musa Umar, a resident of Dala, one of the locations of the terrorists’ shooting, told The Sun.
Residents said the terrorists shot sporadically at Dala, Bulamari, and Ajilari Crosses in the city’s suburbs.
According to Abdullahi Kubo, a resident of Ajilari Cross, the shooting lasted nearly an hour as soldiers and police forces returned fire to clear the terrorists from the area.
As the shooting grew more intense, many residents were forced to flee their homes.
Nahum Daso, Borno State’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the attack. He said a joint security team was dispatched to the scene.
“Following reports of a foiled attack by suspected BH/ISWAP terrorists around Ajilari Cross – Kofa area of Maiduguri. Joint Security operatives have been mobilised to the scene, and efforts are ongoing to assess the situation and restore normalcy,” he said in a statement.
He urged everyone to remain calm and avoid the affected area. He asked members of the public to cooperate with security agencies.
He requested that people call the emergency contact numbers: 08068075581, 08023473293.
