A Northern group, Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has hailed President Bola Tinubu for extending by one year the tenure of office of the Comptroller General of Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi.

CG Adeniyi’s tenure was originally billed to end on August 31, 2025.

A statement by the Convener of Arewa Think Tank, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, said, “we are excited that President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the tenure of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.

“It is a good development because there is the need for continuity in advancing key projects, including the modernization of the Customs Service, the rollout of the National Single Window Project, and the fulfillment of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

“We want to also praise Adeniyi’s leadership, service, steadfastness and dedication to duty over years.

“We believe that the extension would bolster the Customs Service’s role in enhancing trade facilitation, revenue collection, and border security across Nigeria.

“We want to add that this extension reflects the President’s trust in the Comptroller-General’s vision and the importance of sustaining momentum in critical reforms that will shape Nigeria’s economic future.

“We wish to recall that the Comptroller-General was elected as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) earlier this year in Brussels, Belgium, to become the first Nigerian to lead the 73-year-old organisation, which has 186 member-nations.

“We are therefore not in any way surprised that Tinubu has extended his tenure because he has always possessed those innate leadership qualities that discerning persons will always notice and easily gain the confidence to entrust him with even higher responsibilities.

“We noticed with happiness that, within the short period that he has headed the Nigeria Customs Service, the CG has continued to demonstrate competence and sagacity, as well as resilience and a creative spirit,” the statement said.
