Tax reform: Ezekwobi sue for caution

Igbo

Amidst the call by the North for the suspension of the new tax reform bill being proposed by the Federal Government, the Eze Ndigbo Ifako Ijaiye Lago Stste, Eze Michael Ezekwobi (Oyiomanatumba Ndigbo Gbaagburugburu) has called on the Federal Government to tread with caution by carrying out more consultation before implementing it.

Recently, the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax reforms headed by Taiwo Oyedele presented a bill to the Federal Executive Council, which was later approved and transmitted to the National Assembly for passage.

The committee saddled with the responsibility to harmonise multiple taxes and levies at all levels of government is also responsible for the unification of revenue collection functions as well as modernisation and simplification of the tax system, including the use of technology for revenue collection

In a statement, Ezekwobi said: “Even though the tax reform has numerous advantages, efforts should also be made to educate people especially in the North before its full implementation.

Again, with economic hardship experienced across the country, an increase in taxation will further impoverish the masses.”he said.
