Why did you decide to become a talking drummer?

It is something I have always wanted to do. I had passion for the talking drum right from my childhood. Actually my dad is a drummer and my mum is a singer, and that is a talent I took from them. Even none of my siblings learned how to play the drum; it’s a talent that we all grew up with.

In order words, you inherited it from your parents.

Yes. Drumming runs in the family. I learnt how to play the drums from my parents, especially my father who also was a drummer in the church.

At what age did you start playing the drum?

I started learning the drum at 14 or 15 years. Today, I play not only the talking drum but also other instruments.

Among all these musical instruments, which is your favourite?

Talking drum. Actually, it’s talking drum that brought me into the limelight.

Okay, what year did you start performing professionally?

I can’t say because I rehearse everyday. But it’s like 20 years now. I started when I was in secondary school.

How would you describe the talking drum to a non-Yoruba person?

To my own understanding, knowledge is to African style, you use your hand to tune the drum before playing it. And you can say anything with the talking drum. There is nothing you cannot say with it.

Does it have a positive effect on a person?

Yes. I was made to understand that kings stand in awe whenever the talking drum is being played. Yes, there is no way anyone will be playing the drums that you would not dance. The sound is very melodious; it is a very special instrument that makes kings stand whenever the rhythm is felt.

Does it have any economic value?

Yes. Those who sell or repair it do make money. Even the entertainers who play the drums at events are there to make money too.

Have you performed at any event before?

Actually, I play live band at shows. I have my own band and also play for others who have their own bands. I sing as well.

What has playing the drum or music brought into your life?

It has brought a lot into my life. In fact, talking drum is my joy, because whenever I am down, I just carry my talking drum and play. I hardly notice anybody when playing the talking drum. And I do rehearsals for hours. At least, with talking drum I have met many important personalities. Talking drum brings joy into my life when I am sad.
