Taking party to court costs membership in SDP – Aiyenigba

SDP spokesman Araba Aiyenigba

The National Publicity Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Araba Aiyenigba, has said that members who take the party to court automatically forfeit their membership.

Aiyenigba stated this on Tuesday during an appearance on the Prime Time programme on Arise News, where he spoke on internal party discipline and the need for political parties to manage their affairs without external interference.

According to him, the SDP constitution clearly states that any member who brings the party to court loses their membership.

“Even when you take a case to court, the court will often tell you that it is an internal affair and send you back,” Aiyenigba said.

“In the SDP, the moment you take the party to court, you lose your membership.”

He described the growing recognition of internal party autonomy as a positive development for Nigeria’s democracy, noting that political parties should be allowed to manage their internal operations without undue interference.

Aiyenigba added that internal mechanisms exist within the party for resolving disputes among members, stressing that such issues should be handled through established party structures rather than litigation.
