Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Dr Mariya Mahmoud has charged women leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the nation’s capital to take the campaign for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 to the grassroots.
Mahmoud said the APC could not afford to rely on assumptions ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging the party’s women leaders to deploy their structures, experience and grassroots networks to mobilise support for Tinubu and other APC candidates.
The minister gave the charge when she received the FCT APC Woman Leader, Farida Suleiman, and members of her executive committee on a courtesy visit to her office in Abuja.
She assured the women leaders that her office was ready to work closely with the party’s women wing to strengthen the APC and ensure greater inclusion and participation of women across the Federal Capital Territory.
Mahmoud said the capacity, commitment and zeal required to deliver victory for President Tinubu and the APC in 2027 were already available within the party, but stressed the need for intensified grassroots mobilisation, empowerment and inclusive engagement.
She said women would play a critical role in determining the electoral fortunes of the APC in the coming election.
According to her, “women remain critical to the success of the APC”, adding that their effective participation and collaboration with men would be essential to achieving the objectives of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and securing victory for the party at all levels in 2027.
The minister also pointed to the transformation taking place in the FCT under the Tinubu administration, with the support of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, particularly in infrastructure and other critical sectors.
She, however, said the government must continue to ensure that development translates into improved living conditions for residents across the six Area Councils of the Territory.
Mahmoud also called for reconciliation within the APC, saying party members who feel alienated or abandoned must be brought back into the fold ahead of the elections.
She announced the need for a conciliation mechanism that would address grievances and strengthen unity within the party.
The minister urged APC women leaders at all levels to use their influence and grassroots connections to build a stronger and more united party capable of delivering victory in 2027.
Earlier, the FCT APC Woman Leader, Suleiman, pledged the commitment of women across the Territory to mobilise massive support for President Tinubu and all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.
While acknowledging the transformative projects and interventions of the Tinubu administration in the FCT, Suleiman said the President deserved stronger electoral support from the nation’s capital.
She, however, warned that the APC must not take victory for granted, declaring that the party must deliberately take its campaign and message to communities and residents across the FCT.
According to her, “all is not well politically”, warning party leaders against relying on assumptions instead of engaging directly with the people.
She said victory in 2027 would require deliberate grassroots mobilisation, empowerment, sustained engagement and regular interaction with residents across the Territory.
Suleiman called for more town hall meetings and community engagements, as well as greater empathy in communicating government policies and programmes to the people.
She assured that FCT APC women were ready to work under the leadership of Mahmoud, whom she described as “a mother, a politician and a leader with the capacity and integrity to lead the women to victory in 2027”.
The high point of the visit was the presentation of the Tinubu “Torchbearers” initiative to Mahmoud on behalf of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the APC National Women Leader.
The presentation effectively appointed the Minister of State as one of the “Torchbearers” expected to help drive mobilisation and support for President Tinubu and the APC across the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the 2027 general elections.
