First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, governors of Rivers, Sim Fubara, Delta, Sheriff Oborevwori, and their Plateau State counterpart, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, among other important dignitories will be part of the 60th anniversary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) scheduled to hold next week.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, and the chairmen of the organising committees, confirmed that the two-day event will hold next week October 30 and 31 in Abuja.
The organising committee also assured that hotel reservations have been made just as arrangements for feeding have been concluded.
While revealing that Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and members of National Assembly Sports Committees will also be in attendance, the committee assured of robust activities to make the event a huge success.
“It’s no longer news that SWAN will be celebrating a milestone 60th anniversary. We have secured accommodation at three hotels in Abuja.
We have also made arrangements for feeding. I can assure you that we are ready for the event coming up this month October 30 and 31.

“We have spent over N3.5 million to put up a state of arts event. We have equally firm up arrangements for security. We are really ready. We have made contacts and have been assured that the governors of Bayelsa, Rivers and Plateau States will be in attendance apart from other plans we have put in place.
“We also want to inform you that First Lady, the Wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, will also be in attendance. We have also secured the consent of the Deputy Senate President, the owner of Barau FC, Senator Jubril and other members of the House Committee on Sports will be there too,” the Organising Committee announced.
Enumerating other arrangements for the event they explained that there will be an award night where distinguishing sports personalities and Sports Writers will be rewarded for their contributions in the development of sports.
“We have a robust activities to make the event a huge success. The award will commence with an investiture but earlier, we also have thanksgiving service in Churches and Mosques to pray for divine intervention for the success of the programme
This Sports award is among the legally backed awards in the country. Sports Merit Award (SMA) and other categories will be given to athletes, serving, retired and posthumously.
“We have over 200 nominees to recognise apart from the sports writers. Sportsmen and women like Victor Osimeh, Tobi Amosun, among others still active will be given awards.
“Retired players like Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, administrators like Moshood Abola, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, among others will receive posthumous awards. We will partner with some companies as part of their Corporate Social Responsibilities because the event is financially demanding,” the SWAN president explained.
