A suspected gang leader, identified as Ikyoga Joka Biam, has been shot dead in Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area (LGA), of Benue State.

Our correspondent gathered that the gang leader was killed on Monday morning, September 29, near the abattoir close to the NKST Centre in Zaki-Biam town.

According to witnesses, the incident, which occurred before 9 am threw the busy market town into confusion and panic, causing residents to flee in different directions for safety.

While details about those who carried out the attack remain unclear, residents said the killing is unconnected to longstanding rivalries and violent clashes associated with criminal activities in the area.

While some of the residents described the deceased as a repentant gangster, others alleged that he had returned to his former lifestyle, making him a target for a rival group.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benue State Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the killing.

She told reporters via telephone that it was not yet established whether Biam was killed by his own associates or by rivals.

She said: “The police are on the trail of those behind the killing.”
