Suspected cultists, on Wednesday, killed a man suspected to be a member of a rival cult group inside Eke Awka Market in Anambra State.

The incident, according to sources, happened in the morning around 7am when traders had gradually started opening their shops for the business of the day.

A source gave the name of the slain man as Omeli, describing him as a notorious cultist who was always used by some leaders of the market to collect toll from traders.

“He was hacked down in the market, around 7am. He sighted members of the rival cult, and made efforts to escape and also alert his gang members, but he was not lucky.

“His head was cut off, including his manhood, and his assailants took them away, leaving the trunk lying inside a line in the market.

“There was a time he was brutally attacked and dump for dead. Since then he has been in hiding. He even ran away from the hospital where he was being treated. He sneaks in and out of his family house.

“Later on, he was engaged by one vigilante outfit. Once a cultist, you must go down. One thing people must know is that cultists don’t forgive. Even when you repent, they will still come for you,” the source said.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, saying that policemen have been dispatched to the scene to strengthen security.

As expected, the incident caused traders who had come out for their businesses to hurriedly close their shops and flee from the scene.

Some customers who came early to purchase goods also fled the scene, fearing that there might be a reprisal attack by the rival group.
