Supreme Court: Abbo calls for sanctions against ‘judicial bandits’

From Fred Itua, Abuja

Senator Elisha Abbo on Wednesday called for the withdrawal of the appointment of Justice Chioma Nwosu – Iheme into the Supreme Court

Justice Chioma Nwosu – Iheme was among the 11 Justices from the Court of Appeal nominated for vacant seats at the Supreme Court by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December last year as recommended by the National Judicial Council and later confirmed by the Senate .

However, a few days to the inauguration of Justice Chioma Nwosu – Iheme and 10 others as Supreme Court Justices by the Chief Justice of Nigeria , Justice Kayode Ariwoola, Abbo called on President Tinubu to withdraw her nomination.

Abbo who represented Adamawa North in the 9th Senate and won re- election into the 10th Senate before the nullification of his mandate by the Court of Appeal in October last year, made the call for withdrawal of Justice Nwosu – Iheme ‘ s nomination at a press conference .

The former senator alleged that Justice Nwosu – Iheme carried out judicial banditry on his mandate with the lead judgement she delivered on Monday, October 16, 2023, upturning his mandate in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate he defeated with over 11,000 votes.

He added that the alleged miscarriage of justice carried out against him was also done by some other Justices of the Court of Appeal against targeted elected lawmakers and governors, some of which were later upturned by the Supreme Court.

He said: “The kernel of my submission at this press conference is that appointment of Justice Chioma Nwosu – Iheme into the Supreme Court , is not good for our judicial system and dispensation of Justice.

“Justice Chioma Nwosu – Iheme is among some Justices in the country , carrying out judicial coup against democracy in Nigeria . Justices like her should not be allowed to get to the Supreme court.

“President Bola Tinubu should please in line with his renewed hope mantra , terminate the appointment of Justice Chioma Nwosu – Iheme into the Supreme Court to save our judiciary from Judicial bandits.

“For required punishment and deterrence, i have filed petitions against Justice Chioma Nwosu – Iheme, Justice Olabode Adegbehingbe and Justice Muhammad Ibrahim Sirajo , to the National Judicial Council and Chief Justice of Nigeria ( CJN) , over their judgement in the electoral case between Reverend Amos Kumai of the PDP and me.

“The said Justices of the Court of Appeal gave a deliberately skewed judgement against me , which should be critically looked into.”
