The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) has urged President Bola Tinubu to expedite action to cushion the effect of the hard economic decisions and tackle insecurity headlong so as to achieve food security.
The Council led by its Vice President, Dr Bashir Umar, made the request at a meeting with the president.
The meeting came days after the council criticised Tinubu’s administration, stating its regrets for supporting same faith ticket.
On Tuesday, the SCSN provoked a fresh controversy on the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which it said has fallen short of expectations.
According to the organisation, the same faith ticket adopted by President Tinubu to emerge victorious in the last general election has not brought any positive change to the lives of Nigerians.
Speaking to State House Correspondents, Umar, who said the council commended Tinubu’s economic policies, added that they also advocated the deployment of all resources to combat threat to national security.
On the Council’s request that the president expedites action to cushion the effect of the hard economic decisions, Umar said: “We request that he expedites action to cushion the effect of the hard economic decisions that were taken, and also that he brings out everything in his arsenal to face the problem of insecurity, so as to achieve food security.”
On the purpose of the visit, Umar said the group visited to show solidarity and to commend the president on the decisions he has been taking on behalf of the country.
He further disclosed that the Supreme Council for Sharia also submitted the communiqué of its just concluded conference, which x-rayed the 2023 elections, to President Tinubu.
He added that the Council reviewed the nation’s last general election, so as to create a consensus and proffer the way forward to perceived contending issues in the last elections.
“We also submitted to him the communique of our just concluded conference, which brought together Islamic scholars and academics, intellectuals and civil society organisations to make a post mortem of the 2023 elections in order to create a consensus and the way forward.”
Umar said President Tinubu gave assurances and encouraging remarks, and called for more prayers for the peace and security, as well as the development of the country.
“We got very good assurances from the President and very encouraging remarks that call for us to continue to pray intensely for the success of the administration, and for peace, security, and development of the country, which we have been doing, and we are intensifying our prayers for the leadership of the country.”
