Super Eagles’ World Cup dreams dashed in defeat to Congo

Nigeria vs Congo

The Super Eagles’ dreams of playing the 2026 World Cup were dashed on Sunday following a 3-4 defeat to DR Congo in a penalty shootout.

In the tense match that took place at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, both teams failed to find a breakthrough after the end of extra time.

Nigeria’s Frank Onyeka opened the scoring for the Super Eagles in the 3rd minute with a brilliant strike after Zaidu’s shot was deflected by a Congolese defender.

Whatever glimmer of hope Nigerians had was snuffed out when Meschack Elia equalised for Congo in the 32nd minute, bringing the game on level terms at extra time.

Neither side could get the much-needed break after 90 minutes of football, and while Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s heroics were on display, they were not enough in the end as Congo came out on top following a dramatic penalty climax.
