The Super Eagles have been dealt a major setback ahead of their international friendly against Portugal after defender Igoh Ogbu was ruled out with a suspected Achilles tendon injury.

Ogbu sustained the injury during the team’s training session on Saturday evening as preparations intensified for the highly anticipated encounter against the Portuguese national team. According to information released by the Super Eagles’ media officer, Promise Efoghe, the defender is suspected to have suffered a rupture of his left Achilles tendon.

A statement from the team’s medical department confirmed that the injury occurred during training, forcing the centre-back out of contention for the friendly. Further medical examinations are expected to determine the severity of the injury and the likely duration of his absence from action.

The development comes as a significant blow for both the player and the Nigerian national team, with Ogbu having been expected to play a key role in the fixture. His absence now leaves the coaching crew with fewer defensive options as the Super Eagles continue preparations for upcoming international assignments.

The injury also raises concerns over the defender’s immediate future, given the lengthy recovery period often associated with Achilles tendon injuries. The Super Eagles medical team is expected to provide further updates after comprehensive assessments are completed.

Nigeria will now head into the Portugal clash without one of its defensive options, as the team seeks to build momentum and fine-tune preparations ahead of future competitive engagements.
