Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo has recounted how missing the World Cup in 2006 stunted the careers of many players in that team.
He made this known amid the current Super Eagles’ struggle to reach the 2026 World Cup in North America.
With 11 points, Eric Chelle’s team sit in third place, three points behind joint leaders Benin Republic and South Africa.
The Super Eagles will later today play Lesotho in a crunch encounter at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane.

According to Yobo, who played for Everton, many of the players in the 2006 Eagles squad could not move to bigger clubs.
He told Brila FM: “I feel horrible because something similar happened during our time.
“We were young, a strong generation, and missing the 2006 World Cup affected our careers.”
Yobo, who was in coach Adegboyega Onigbinde’s 2002 World Cup squad, rued the failure to play in the 2006 tournament.
“We had just come off the 2002 tournament, and that continuity would have helped many of us move to bigger clubs. Missing that World Cup was a setback,” he said.
