Former Sports Minister and presidential aide Sunday Dare has praised Team Nigeria’s performance at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, calling it proof that the country’s sports development strategy remains on track.

Dare said he was pleased the National Sports Commission (NSC) has continued building on the reforms his administration introduced between 2019 and 2023, adding that the results in Glasgow reflect that foundation.

He highlighted that Nigeria has now held onto its position as Africa’s best-performing nation at the Games for a second consecutive edition, a status first regained in Birmingham in 2022 when the country placed seventh overall — its strongest showing since finishing fourth in 1994. According to Dare, sustaining that ranking in Glasgow signals real, steady progress rather than a one-off result.

He also credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration for backing sports through stronger funding and institutional support, saying this has given athletes greater confidence to compete internationally.

Dare singled out NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade for maintaining the momentum, and expressed optimism that continued investment in young athletes will keep producing results on the continental and global stage.
