Sun Award, a call to greater service, says NECO Registrar, Professor Dantani

The Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examination Council (NECO), Professor Dantani Wushishi has described his nomination for the 2024 Sun Public Service award as a call to a greater service, saying that the organization is prepared to render unflinching service to Nigerians in the conduct of quality examinations.

The NECO Registrar stated this at the organization headquarter in Minna, the Niger state capital on Monday when the Managing Director/Editor in Chief of the Sun Publishing Limited, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh led other management staff, including the Editor Daily sun, Mr. Iheanacho Nwosu and the Editor Nation Capital, Abuja and North, Mrs. Folashade Adetutu to present the letter of nomination for the award to him in his office.

Professor Dantani who expressed gratitude to the management of the Sun Publishing Limited which he described as the Voice of the Nation, stated that the award is not for him alone but for the entire management and staff of the organization who have continued to work tirelessly to ensure the examination body delivers on its mandate of conducting a quality examinations for Nigerians.

According to him, “this nomination for the Sun public service award is not an award only for the Registrar, but the management and the entire staff of the council, including all other stakeholders that help the organization to achieve in its mandate, they are equally included. Also fundamental parts of this great award are those that consumed our products like the candidates who write all our examinations”.

He pointed out that the award will spur the management and staff of the organization to consolidate on the achievements so far recorded under his watch since he assumed office, stressing that in addition to conducting examinations in Nigeria, the council has spread its tentacles to seven other countries of the world in the conduct of its examinations.

Already he said schools from six African countries and one from the Middle East are now writing NECO examinations, saying that more Nigerians are willing and pleading with the council to extend its services to their countries of resident so that they will stop bringing their children to Nigeria to write NECO examinations.

The NECO disclosed that the examination body under his watch will ensure that Nigerians write the NECO examinations wherever they are in the world, adding that “Nigerians do not need to come to Nigeria before writing our examinations. NECO is prepared to render unflinching services to Nigerians. NECO will organize examinations for Nigerians anywhere they may be across the world. They don’t need to come to Nigeria for such examinations and that is our target”, he added.

He therefore urged the management of the Sun Publishing Company Limited to continue to sustain the professionalism that the company is known for which made it the Voice of the Nation, adding that the organization has distinguished itself as a newspaper to be reckoned with in the country and beyond.

Earlier the Managing Director/Editor in Chief, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh told the Registrar that the Board of Editors of the sun Publishing Limited, after a rigorous selection process, decided to picked him as the winner of the Sun Public Service award for 2024, stressing that the award will be formally presented to him at an elaborate ceremony on March1, 2025 at the prestigious the Sun award in Lagos.

Mr. Ukeh told his host that the list of his achievements in office is inexhaustible and these he pointed out includes timely conduct and release of NECO examinations, successful trial testing of NECO examinations in selected schools across the six geo-political zones of country as well as securing intervention funds from the federal government to offset all its liabilities to examiners.

According to him, “it is worthy of note that despite your busy schedules as NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, you are also an external Examiner to many Universities, including University of South Africa. You are also patron of many student associations and have received various honors from reputable institutions across the world.

“Determined to make NECO an internationally recognized examination body, you initiated series of reforms aimed at achieving excellence. Those reforms have raised the standard and have brought about excellence”, adding that his achievements in NECO has set the Registrar apart as an accomplished administrator, a great academic and a master reformer, and has contributed immensely to national development in the education sector.

“It is for these reasons and many more that our Board of Editors choose you as the winner of the Sun Public Service award for 2024. The Sun Public Service award is given to that man who has made impact in public service for the good of the nation”, he submitted.

The highlight of the presentation of the letter of nomination to the Registrar was also the presentation of souvenirs to the managing Director/Editor in Chief by the Registrar, Professor Dantani Wushishi.
